The ACU-SOL solar-powered regulating system is designed to maintain a constant, precise flow (+/- 5%) from a minimum of 32 gpm (2 L/s) to a maximum of 4,000 gpm (250 L/s) for upstream water levels ranging from 0 to 40 feet (12 m). The ACU-SOL solar-powered regulator has been used for flow control in combined sewer systems (CSO), sanitary sewer systems (SSO) and batch plant effluents, and is well suited to regulating very low to medium discharges. The ACU-SOL solar-powered controller is installed downstream of the control point in a dry well and requires no differential head for correct operation.

The ACU-SOL solar control system ranges from GAS-R-15 to GAS-R-40. The GAS-R-15 has an inlet diameter of 6 inches (15 cm) with a flow range of 32 to 400 gpm (2 to 25 L/s) and the GAS-R-40 has an inlet diameter of 16 inches (40 cm) with a flow range of 800 to 4,000 gpm (50 to 250 L/s). ACU-SOL model selection is based entirely on the flow range required.
The ACU-SOL solar controller maintains a constant discharge at a defined value independent of the upstream water level. The opening of the ACU-SOL solar controller is adjusted according to the upstream water level to produce a constant discharge. The most important functional elements are the counterweighted pivoting radial gate, the radial gate operator, the upstream water level measuring device, the solar power unit and the control panel. During periods of low flow, the pivoting radial gate remains in the fully open position.
The upstream water level is monitored using an ultrasonic water level meter. This makes it possible to adjust the position of the counterbalanced radial swivel valve according to the set flow value and the flow relationship in the control panel.
The ACU-SOL solar controller is self-flushing to prevent blockages. During operation, the ACU-SOL is programmed at specific intervals to open completely to allow any blockage to pass through the controller unhindered. This eliminates blockage under upstream water level pressure, after which the regulating process resumes.
Each ACU-SOL solar controller is calibrated on a fully functional, large-scale test bench. Each ACU-SOL solar controller is shipped to site pre-set to the desired design flow rate. What's more, the control panel enables future flow adjustments to be made in situ (if required). The controller can then be installed and commissioned without the need for time-consuming and costly in situ calibration or flow measurement.
The ACU-SOL solar controller must be fitted with a servo-control unit to change the design flow rate from fully open to closed. The ACU-SOL solar controller can be fitted with an inductive flow meter which is used to monitor the flow through the unit during periods of dry weather flow. The ACU-SOL solar controller can be controlled using the local control panel or remotely from a central control location.
