SURE-FLOAT (Floating Regulator)

The SURE-FLOAT Floating Regulator System is designed to maintain a constant and accurate flow from a minimum of 80 gpm (5 L/s) to a maximum of 480 gpm (30 L/s) for upstream water levels varying from 0 to 20 feet (6 m). The SURE-FLOAT Floating Regulator has been used for flow control from settling ponds, tailings ponds, sedimentation tanks, storm water detention tanks, reservoirs and basins as well as effluent from batch process plants and is well suited to regulate small discharges. The SURE-FLOAT Floating Regulator is installed upstream of the control point in a tank, reservoir or basin and does not require a differential head for proper operation.

Range of Application

The SURE-FLOAT Floating Regulator System is a model GSF-R-20-*. The GSF-R-20-* has an inlet diameter of 8 inches (20 cm) with a flow range of 80 to 480 gpm (5 to 30 L/s). The SURE-FLOAT’s model selection is based entirely on the flow and height range required.

System Operation

The SURE-FLOAT Floating Regulator maintains a constant discharge at a set value independent of the upstream water level. The SURE-FLOAT Floating Regulator is effectively skimming the surface of any installation it is placed in. The flow is based on the float buoyancy which controls the submergence of the inlet. The inlet opening is made up of an integral baffle and weir. This allows for the separation of solids without negatively impacting the flow. The SURE-FLOAT Floating Regulator is hinged at the bottom and top of the inlet pipe so that the inlet opening is kept in the horizontal position for optimal flow control.


Each SURE-FLOAT Floating Regulator is shipped to site pre-set to the desired design flow. In addition, the set point may be modified by adding or removing water from the floats for in-situ flow adjustments (should it be required). The regulator can then be installed and put into operation without requiring time consuming and cost intensive in-situ flow calibration or measurement.


Should a skimming function be required, the baffle can be removed.
